Literacy and Learning Module 2

Module 2 consists of four staff development programs illustrating instructional strategies to help teachers increase students' abilities to read and learn. Strategies in this module include: "Journaling," "Word Problem Comprehension," and "Generating Interactions between Schemata and Text" (GIST), "Vocabulary Knowledge", "Knowledge Rating" and "Writer's Workshop". While each strategy is demonstrated in one content area, each can be used in any content area at any grade level.

1. Literacy & Mathematics Grade 8
Features student problem-solving with the help of three strategies: "Word Problem Comprehension," "G.I.S.T." (Generating Interactions between Schemata and Text) and "Vocabulary Development". These strategies help students to better interpret vocabulary and situations described in word problems and to distinguish between essential and nonessential information.

2. Language Arts: Writing Grade 8
Features "Writer's Workshop", highlighting seven effective instructional practices: Mini-lessons; Status of the Class; Student-Teacher Conferences; Peer Conferences; Independent Writing; Share Circle, and Publication. Also includes an exploration of Status of the Class as a management technique and a Goal Setting Conference.

3. Literacy & Science Grade 8
Literacy and Science highlights "Journaling". This versatile strategy involves all four components of literacy: 1) reading expository text; 2) listening to teacher and peer explanations; 3) communicating about the experience; and 4) writing in various journal formats.

4. Integrating Reading Grade 7
Highlights "Knowledge Rating", a pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading activity. Through participation in brainstorming and the use of the Knowledge Rating form, students are encouraged to master word meanings within different contexts to enhance concept and vocabulary development.
