Burden Museum & Gardens: A Family's Gift DIGITAL DOWNLOAD
In the center of the busiest corridor of one of Louisiana’s largest cities lie hundreds of acres of fields, forests and remnants of a lifestyle from an earlier century. LPB, the Burden Foundation, LSU and the LSU AgCenter present Burden Museum & Gardens: A Family’s Gift. It will take us on a journey that begins in the 1800’s where we meet the family whose heirs would eventually make an extraordinary gift for future generations. The program is produced, written and directed by LPB’s Tika Laudun (Louisiana A History; Katrina 10 Years After) and photographed and edited by LPB’s Rex Q. Fortenberry.
In 1966, Ione, Steele, and Mrs. Pike (Jeannette) Burden began donating their 440 rural and wooded acres and farmland to LSU. Located in what is now the heart of Baton Rouge, the family wanted to ensure the protection and care of the flora and fauna, the lush landscapes and the agricultural heritage that now comprise Burden Museum & Gardens. Today Burden Museum & Gardens is made up of the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens, LSU Rural Life Museum, and Windrush Gardens. Burden Museum & Gardens offers discovery and adventure through historic, natural and educational experiences, providing a window into Louisiana’s rich, cultural past. Burden Museum & Gardens: A Family’s Gift commemorates the 50th anniversary of this state treasure.
For Parents & Teachers:
In the 1800s the Burden family lived on hundreds of acres of woodland and farmland in Baton Rouge that one day would be gifted by their heirs to LSU to become the Burden Museum & Gardens. Their legacy ensures the protection and care of the flora and fauna, the lush landscapes, and the rich agricultural heritage. A visit today is an opportunity to learn about the lifestyle of an earlier time and take part in activities, such as: the Children’s Garden; the Trees and Trails program which now includes The Mosaic Boardwalk at Black Swamp; Master Gardener courses; and the Junior Docent Program. Annual events invite kids to enjoy hayrides, corn mazes, and a farm animal petting zoo.
